The importance of introducing protein foods for children’s growth: benefits and recommendations

The growth and development of children is a process that requires an adequate nutritional intake and proteins play a fundamental role. They are essential for the development of tissues, the immune system and the correct functioning of the organism. The introduction of proteins in the infant diet should be done gradually and adequately, especially in the first years of life, when the body is in full growth.

This article explains the importance of introducing protein-rich foods in children’s diets, the recommended ages according to European legislation, and how pouches (pouches with pureed fruits, vegetables, cereals, yogurt, etc.) can be an effective tool for protein consumption.

The role of protein in children’s growth

Proteins are essential nutrients, as they are the main components of cells, muscles, organs and other tissues. During childhood, the body is in formation and proteins are needed in large quantities to ensure good physical and mental development.

Proteins have several functions in the infant body:

  • Growth and development: proteins promote muscle growth and the development of organs and tissues, essential at this formative stage.
  • Brain development: Amino acids present in proteins are essential for cognitive function and learning.
  • Strengthening the immune system: Proteins help protect the body against infection and disease.
  • Energy source: Proteins can also be used as a source of energy, in addition to carbohydrates and fats.

Recommended age for the introduction of proteins in the infant diet

According to the guidelines of European legislation and international health organizations, the introduction of proteins should be gradual, adapting to the child’s digestive system. European legislation, especially through EFSA, recommends:

  • From the age of 6 months: it is recommended to introduce solid foods, starting with proteins of vegetable origin such as lentil or chickpea purees, and well cooked and mashed animal products. This avoids the risk of choking.
  • Between 6 and 12 months: Animal and vegetable proteins can be introduced in small amounts. Proteins should be offered in the form of purees or small, easily digestible portions.
  • From 12 to 24 months: A wider variety of protein sources can be introduced, such as lean meats, fish, eggs and dairy. Digestive capacity improves, allowing for a wider variety of foods.
  • From 2 years: Children can consume a full range of proteins, including meats, fish, legumes, tofu and dairy. The amount of protein will depend on age, weight and activity level.

Why choose protein pouches for children?

Pouches, small pouches with pureed fruits, vegetables, cereals and other healthy ingredients, have become a practical solution for feeding children, especially the youngest ones. These products are an excellent way to introduce protein into children’s diets so that:

  • Convenience and accessibility: they are easy to use, allowing parents to offer a nutritious meal even away from home. They are easy to digest and adapted to each stage of development.
  • Combination of foods: The pouches combine protein with other essential nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and fiber from fruits, vegetables and cereals. This ensures a balanced and varied diet.
  • Portion control and safety: The pouches come in controlled portions, avoiding overfeeding. In addition, the puree makes the risk of choking minimal.
  • Encouraging healthy food consumption: By including protein from healthy sources such as yogurt or fortified cereals, pouches can help children develop a positive relationship with nutritious foods.

At Fruselva, we have always believed in fresh and natural foods as the best option for infant feeding, since chewing is the best way to introduce new flavors and textures. However, we understand that in certain situations, such as when children eat away from home, pouches are a practical, safe and nutritious solution, as they do not require refrigeration and can be taken anywhere.

Introducing protein-rich foods is essential for children’s physical, mental and immune growth. Proteins are essential for brain development and tissue formation, and pouches with fruits, vegetables, cereals and yogurt are an effective and practical way to introduce them into children’s diets, promoting the consumption of healthy foods and ensuring that children get the nutrients necessary for their optical growth.
